Course Description...

Before cameras, portraiture was one of the main forms of art practiced by artists, and even today, it is still one of the most popular subjects in art. Learning how to draw portraits is very useful in becoming an artist, as the techniques required will carry over into the fundamental skills of many other art forms. We will be studying from life, as well as doing 2-3 drawings from photos of your choice. Be sure to bring in several photos, so you have a variety to choose from.

Required Materials list: sketchbook 9x12 or no smaller than 8.5x11 (can be new or used), 3 sheets of Canson white drawing paper 18x24 70lb, graphite pencils HB and 2B, vine/willow charcoal, compressed charcoal, white eraser, kneaded eraser.

The best designed characters in media stand as popular icons of their works. In this class, we will explore what makes these designs so successful, and use that knowledge to shape our own character designs. In addition, we will look at why different characters are designed in different styles, and then develop our own new styles from scratch. Overall, you’ll come out of this class with an expanded knowledge of design language, and the means to develop your own original characters and art styles.

Required materials list: sketchbook 9x12, or no smaller than 8.5x11 (can be new or used), graphite pencils (any kind you prefer), eraser

Optional: If you like ink, colored pencil, or other materials, you can use them to finish your drawings when there’s free time or after class.
